ROAR Newsletter for July 29th, 2019

The July 26th meeting began with a patriotic song led by Lion Pat Harrison. Aaron Odell performed the invocation and Lion Jeff Meader led the flag salute.

Retired journalist Paul Hurley was a guest for the meeting.

Lion Tony Loliva won the “no-fine” badge for the meeting. 

Announcements

President Ruth Mckee provided an update on the progress of the Charity Golf Tournament Committee.  The next meeting will be on Monday 7/29 at the Starbucks on Riggins.  Gift cards, players and Tee Sign Sponsors are still needed.

Lion Tom Link shared that the Tulare County Historical Society is selling tickets to the August 7th Rawhide Game with seats in the Hall of Fame Club for a donation of $15.  On August 6th the Mighty Oak Chorus will be singing our National Anthem.

Lion Tony Loliva generously donated twenty dollars in lieu of bringing back an auction item from his recent travels.

Happy Bucks

Lion Jeff Meader will be heading to San Diego with his family next week.

Lion George Fry enjoyed the salmon and asparagus at lunch.

San Francisco Giants fan Pete Sherwood donated one dollar for each game his team is above .500 this year and challenged all Dodgers fans to do the same.

Lion Aaron Odell received a visit from college friends.

Lion Steve Gerrard is happy that his kitchen remodeling project is almost complete.

Lion George Fry will be remembering his wife on her birthday tomorrow.

Lion Bob Line has been keeping up with the Joneses (Ed and Carol) on Facebook.

Lion Karen McVaigh, who is on her way to Mammoth and San Diego, donated five happy bucks.

Golf committee member Allen Ventling had a very successful week.  He solicited donations from Harris Ranch, River Island and others.

Tom Link was happy to see his friend Paul Hurley at Club.

Lion Vicki Whitehouse shared that Paul is the President of another local Service Club.

Once again, President Ruth McKee was happy it was Friday.

Lion Vicki Whitehouse fined Lion Tom Link for harassing our guest.

Lion Allen Ventling fined Lion Pat Harrison for having his tee shirt exposed.

President Ruth fined Lions Pat Harrison. Steve Gerrard and Bob Line for allegedly telling jokes about short persons.

Jeff Meader won the five-dollar raffle and donated the prize.  President Ruth won the free ad. Lion Daryl Farnsworth won the Lotto tickets. Lion Tom Link won a shot at the marble drawing but missed his chance at fame and fortune.  

Presentation

Retired journalist Paul Hurley describe the changes he has seen in local newspapers over the past 40 years. He reported that local print newspapers will probably continue to exist, but as regional papers with far less up-to-date local reporting than in years past.

Gil Jaramillo shared that the Hispanic Chamber’s Chili Verde Golf Tournament is Friday September 6th.

Lion Tom Gaebe announced that the Lion’s High School Band Review will be on October 12th.

Happy Bucks

Lion Karen McVaigh donated five happy bucks after finding the lost Club heirloom Presidents Pin.

Lion Dee Baughman continues to do well after not having surgery on his knees.  He is also happy with the recent San Francisco Giant’s winning streak

Now that she has returned from Texas, Lion Carol Jones will be traveling with Lion Ed to Ireland. 

Lion Ed was happy his Dodgers continue to do well. 

Lion Pete Sherwood was glad to see Fresno resident Justin Levy back at Club.

Tournament Chair Melinda Blankenship shared that preparations for the Golf Tournament are going well.

Lion Steve Gerrard’s granddaughter is in basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antone.

Lion Roy Dressel is marking the second anniversary of his by-pass operation.

Lion Vicki Whitehouse shared that her husband continues to do well.  She also said that her kids are having fun at Comicon in San Diego.

Once again, President Ruth McKee was happy it was Friday.

Lion Tom link fined guest Gil Jaramillo for telling him that being on the Cemetery Board was an easy gig.

Lion Dee Baughman fined Colorado Rockies fan Justin Levy after the Giants crushed the Rockies in a recent series.

Lion Justin Levy fined Roy Dressel for arriving late.

Secret Greeter Lion Tom Link fined Bob Bricker for not shaking his hand prior to the meeting as required.

Presentation

Patricia Button, Executive Director of the Genesis House, described the services they provide as a shelter for homeless runaway girls. The organization’s immediate needs include volunteers, Board Members, and monthly donations.

The guests for the meeting were Deanne Wulf of Unite the Parks, Jessica Robinson, wife of Lion Brent Robinson, and Melissa Murphy of CASA.

Lion Vicki Whitehouse won the “no-fine” badge for the meeting.

Club members sang the Happy Birthday Song to Janet McClintock, Karen McVaigh, Bob Bricker, and Lauri Aguilar, who were all born in July.

Announcements

Auctions

Back from his trip to Europe, Lion Pete Sherwood auctioned off a box of Chocolates from Vienna. Lion George Fry shared that one of his seminary professors was from Vienna and bought the chocolates for a donation of $30.

Not to be outdone, Lion Tom Link auctioned off three boxes of chocolates from Niagara Falls, Quebec, and Charlottesville. The Canadian chocolates were purchased by Lions Karen McVaigh and Janet McClintock.

Lion Pete Sherwood commended Lion Janet for starting the bidding war for the Vienna chocolates. 

Lion Roy Dressel shared that a friend is recovering from quadruple bypass surgery.

Lion Dee Baughman continues to do well after not having surgery on his knees.

Lion Allen Ventling had a fun trip to Vegas.

Lion Craig Wheaton, who retired recently, is starting his work on Mountain Bike Patrol at China Peak.

Lion Tom Link had a great vacation.

Deanne Wulff of Unite the Parks described her efforts to establish Range of Light National Monument between Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks.

ROAR Newsletter for June 28, 2019

 

The June 28th  meeting began with a patriotic song. Dee Baughman performed the invocation and Lion Roy Dressel led the flag salute.

Guests for the meeting were Gil Jaramillo of the Tulare Kings Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Barbara Pilegard of the Tulare County Association of Governments.

In a preemptive move, former President Karen McVaigh purchased the “no-fine” badge for the meeting.

Announcements

Secretary Steve Gerrard presented a plaque to Lion of the Year Lauri Aguilar and recognized her outstanding contributions to the Club.  In addition to leading our efforts on the very successful Murder Mystery Dinner, Lion Lauri was also on our Board of Directors, volunteered to help with vision screening and charity events, and served on Club committees.  As Lion of the Year Lauri was made a Life Member of the Lions Eye Foundation.

Secretary Steve also made a donation to the Club Foundation account.

Former President Karen announced that the Club will dark on July 5th.  Members are welcome to go wherever they want on Friday, except Club.

Once again, Lion Ruth McKee, our newly installed president, was happy it was Friday.

Lion Melinda Blankenship commended Lion Karen on her farewell speech at the installation Dinner.

Fellow Past President Roy Dressel commended Lion Karen and Congratulated Lion Lauri.  Lion Jeff Meader also congratulated Lauri, Karen and Ruth.

Lion George Fry’s granddaughter graduated from her high school as valedictorian.

Lion Dee Baughman is happy to be celebrating Independence Day.

Lion Brad Board said the installation dinner was a great event and he is looking forward to working with President Ruth.

Modest Bob Line commended the speaker who installed the officers at the installation dinner. 

Lion Karen McVaigh thanked Lion Vicki for planning the installation dinner, and Lion Dee Baughman for acting as Master of Ceremonies so soon after major surgery.

Lion of the Year Lauri Aguilar thanked everyone.

Lion Vicki Whitehouse donated a massive amount of happy bucks and shared that her husband is doing well.  She also thanked Lions Karen and Melinda.

Lion Roy Dressel fined himself for having to leave early.

Lion Jeff Meader fined himself for missing the installation dinner.  He was out of town for work.

Lion Dee Baughman fined Lion Brad Board after trying to follow Brad’s truck which has tiny tail lights.
