Todays Meeting

Lion President Tony led our meeting today and called on Lion Pat to lead us in saluting the flag, Lions Bob Line to lead us in singing God Bless America, and Lion Dee to do the invocation. 

The no-fine badge went to Lion Betty.

The secret greater today was Lion Dee. You Roar editor Lion Roy, along with Lions Tom Link and Bob Bricker, had to shell out a dollar for not shaking his hand.

Announcements

Lion Leigh announced that Dee and himself had gone to La Sierra school for a Leo club meeting that they found out had been canceled, but Lion Leigh came home with a Leo shirt.

Lion Craig did the second reading of the slate of officers for the 2023-24 year. The list will appear at the end of this week’s newsletter.

It was discussed at the last board meeting that we send a survey to all members regarding our once-a-month evening meetings. We have been doing this for about a year and the board would like input on how all club members feal about these meetings and the cost of the meals, which will be increasing.  Lion Lauri sent out a survey last week so check your emails if you have not seen it and if you have not done so yet, please fill it out and either bring it to the club on Wednesday evening or scan it and send it back. It’s also ok to simply reply by email, it’ll save all that scanning.

Auction Items

Lion Betty and Aaron had just returned from a trip to Isreal and brought back a box of Dates, purchased by Lion Pat for $10.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Dee was happy his granddaughter was in a play at her school.

Lion Mark was happy that his 1,700-mile drive to and from Idaho was safe, and he had got to see his daughter and son-in-law.

Lion Roy was happy our speaker Christy Wood was with us, and in talking with her, he realized he had done a photo shoot for her back in the 90s:  three horses, a Corvette, and several people. 

Lion Bob Line was happy his grandson, a head baseball coach, won Clovis in the Valley playoffs. They were 21-5 on the season.

Lion Aaron was happy that he and Betty had a great trip to Isreal and that the flight on El Al was also good—especially the food.

Lion Pat noted that one of our former members, Mark Krantz had a similar story to Ann Frank and had spent some time living in Isreal after WWII.

Lion Craig was $5 happy that he made it to Yosemite and saw some amazing waterfalls. “There’s water where there’s never been water before,” he noted.

Lion Allen was happy that he was going to Anaheim to watch the Angles play his beloved Red Sox for the 25th year, and making it more rewarding, he was going with his sons.

Fines

Lion Karen fined herself because her phone rang. Come to find out, her grandson got stuck in the play area at Carls Jr., and the child’s mother didn’t know what to do. 

Lion Tom Link was also fined for his phone ringing during club. 

Lion Allen tried to fine Lion Betty for something, but she was the holder of the no-fine badge, and he had to pay the buck.

Lion Dee won the no-fine badge this week and was the secret greater today: He was so popular as everyone shook his hand.

Announcements 

Lion Craig did the first reading of the slate of officers for the 2023-2024 club year. Two more readings will take place before the members can be approved.

Lion Karen had an announcement from Lion Lauri about the upcoming Murder Mystery Dinner on September 16th. We need gift cards of $25 or more. We also need gift baskets and donations of auction gifts, and don’t forget about sponsorships.

Auction Items 

Lion Dee had been to Utah to visit family and brought back a box of Milk chocolate orange Sticks purchased by Lion Pat, who passed them around. They were excellent.

Lion Karen had been to Disney World but brought nothing to auction, so she donated $20.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Pat was happy that the 68th Woodlake Rodeo would be taking place this coming weekend. The Woodlake Lions Club has hosted the radio for years.

Lion Dee was happy to have spent time with Family in Utah.

Lion Brad was happy that he would be having a new grandson come this December,  his tenth.

Lion Pete was happy to have spent last week in Crawford, TX at a wedding, and no, he did not see W. He was also happy his grandson was on the all-star team and they won one game, but lost and did not go on.

Lion Tom Gaebe was happy his granddaughter would be at a track and field meet.

Lion Craig was happy that he recently helped close down China Peak Ski Resort and now its hiking season.

Fines

Lion Roy fined Lion Pete for not being at last week’s meeting, where Roy could have told a fun story from Pete’s daughter’s wedding.

Gary Herbst, the CEO of Kaweah Health, was in our program today. He had a lot to talk about, from the money crunch that Kaweah, along with almost every hospital in the state, to the large number of nurses who have already left the profession because of burnout to the many more expected to leave in the next two years to the high cost of traveling nurses (at one point, $200 an hour) It was an informative program.

Lion Pat was $5 happy because his Barbershop group had a successful event on Saturday the 29th.

Lion Tom Gaebe was $20 happy because he had survived his 50th year of Tax preparation, and his brother had recently undergone a successful quadruple bypass operation.

Lion Roy had a happy buck because his Visit to the DMV was very efficient. 

Lion Leigh was $5 happy because the Special Olympics Track and Field event held on Friday the 28th went off very well, and Lion Allen stopped by to help out, though he was heard to complain that Leigh worked him too hard.

Lion Bob Line was happy that his grandson had won a prize at a recent science fair.

Lion Elaine was happy that she was headed to Israel on Monday.

Lion Elaine fined Lion Allen for using “colorful” language when in line to get food. 

Lion Pat fined himself for also using “colorful” language in a song at his recent barbershop concert; one other member was offended by it.

Lions Leigh and Dee joined another La Sierra Military Academy’s Leo Club meeting. Things are moving right along with the group. They have about twenty members and have their first project, helping out at the April 28th Special Olympics Track and field event.

Lion Betty was happy they recently had a new garage door installed at their house.

Lion Bob Line was happy his grandson, an El Diamonte high school coach, was featured in an article in the Visalia Times-Delta. (a local newspaper)

Lion Pat was $5 happy that a particular quartet he knows (and belongs to) recently sang the National Anthem at the Visalia Rawhide game. It actually ended up being a duo because certain people (Lion Dee) did not get the message and watched from the stands.

Lion Leigh was happy that his granddaughter and two great-grandkids were back in town from a stay in Michigan.

Lion Dee was happy that the Might Oak Chorus he is part of is having an event next Saturday, April  29th, at the Neighborhood Church.

Lion Mark was happy that one of his kids had completed a move from Texas to Idaho.

Lion Roy was happy that the online ticket ordering system is up and running for our I Love the 80s to Death Murder Mystery Dinner on September 16th.

Today Walter Deissler talked about historic preservation in Visalia. Several areas have been set aside as historic areas of the city, and he talked about the history of Visalia and the movement to preserve that history that began in 1978.

New Online Booking Available For Club Programs 

An online booking system has been set up to make it easier for the club to book speakers for our meetings (and a lot easier for the program chairman). If you have a person who would like to speak at our club, you can send them to the page, and they can see available days and book right there. That will take that day off the calendar and email the program chairman know they have booked. No more having to contact the program chairman to find out the available days.

Club Greater Lion Allen announced that we had four guests today. Two Leo club members from La Sierra were with us, along with their advisor, Priscilla Lara. Our fourth guest was today’s program, Kevin McCusker from Cal Water.

Lion Allen announced that there will be a Vision screening at the Manual Hernandez Center on Saturday, April 29th, and he needs help. Please call or text Lion Allen for details at 559-936-4563.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Pete was happy that in his grandson’s Wednesday evening baseball game, he went two for three in his team’s 16-0 rout. Pete was also happy that the Dodgers were out of San Francisco.

Lion Karen was happy because she won $10 from last week’s Lotos Ticket and donated $1 to the club.

Lion Dee was happy that the Leos were with us today and that the Giants didn’t lose on Thursday. (that would be because they didn’t play)

Lion Aaron was also happy because the Leos were with us today.

Lion Roy was happy because the Dodgers had won two of three against the Giants in San Francisco. (the reason Lion Pete was happy to see them leave)

Lion Craig was happy because he had spent some time in Lake Tahoe with a good friend who had never gambled and they had come home with $225 more then they had gone with.

Lion Pat was also happy the Leo group was with us today.

Our guest, Leo C.O. Gonzalez had a happy buck for being with us today.

Our program today was from Kevin McCusker with Cal Water. Lots of info about our water situation and why we are still in a stage two water restriction when we have had record rain and snow this year. It’s because we get all our water from wells and it takes time for the undergraund acqufirs to recharge.
