Announcements

Our monthly evening meeting is this Wednesday night, October 26th, at 5:30, at Quail Park Shannon Ranch.

Guests

We had three guests today, Visalia School district superintendent Kirk Shrum, who was our program, with him was Andre Pecina, who, based on the information on his business card says he is an Administrator, communications, strategy, and outreach for the district. Also with us was president Tony’s wife, Nancy.

Auction Items

Lions Betty and Aaron had been to Lake Tahoe and brought back a box of fudge that Lion Betty auctioned off for $13 to Lion Karen, with Lion Pat chipping in $3 of that total.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Dee was happy as he made the choking motion because the Dodgers had lost in the first round of the playoffs. The ABD (anyone but the Dodgers) wish had come true. 

Lion Miriam was going camping at Pismo for one night; it would be her first time camping, so one night was good, in case this was not to her liking.

Lion Craig was happy because he was leaving for a trek in Nepal on Monday.

Lion Karen was happy for the visitors today, and happy Lion Pat helped here with the purchase of the fudge.

Lion Bob Line was happy because the logo now being used for Visalia Unified was designed when he was superintendent.

Lion Allen was happy the two vision screenings went well at the charter schools this past Wednesday. He was also happy Lion Craig helped out.

Lion Tom Link was happy the band review went so well last Saturday.

Fines

Lion Betty fined Lion Roy because he had his badge sideways.

Lion Karen fined herself for haveing to leave early. 

Lion Tom Link was fined because he was late.

$5 went to Lion Roy who donated it to the Eye Foundation.

Lion Craig drew for the coveted white marble but came up with another color that did not net him anything.

 

 

 

Visalia Unified superintendent Kirk Shrum was our program today, and he talked about his coming to Visalia from Georgia and his vision for the district. It was an informative program. It is interesting to note that when he went looking for a new job, he selected districts where he thought he could make a difference, not just come into a position but work to build and make it better.

Brent Calvin, today’s program won the no-fine badge. He sold it to Lion Tom Link, the first dual no-fine badge in club history. 

Lion President Tony lead the meeting today and called on Lion Karen to lead us in the pledge, Lion Pat to lead us in singing My Country Tiss of Thee, plus Lion Brad to do the invocation.

Secret greater: Lion Bob Line was the secret great today, was only Lion Janet, and Lion Bob Bricker did not shake his hand. “worth every penny,” they said.

Lion Tom Gaebe made one last announcement about the band review on Saturday, the 15th. 32 Bands would be in attendance.

Lion Allen announced that there would be a Vision Screening at Quail Park Shannon Ranch as part of their Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 29th, from 5-8 PM.

Auction Items 

Lion Karen had been to Grece and brought back a bag of Olives purchased by Lion Pat for $10. She also auctions off a small bottle of Anise Liqueur from her trip to Greece that Steve purchased for $10.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Craig had $5 happy bucks as he counted down the days until his trip to Nepal. He told us that Katmandu, the largest city in Nepal, was also the largest city in the world without running water.

Lion Tom Link was happy that Lion Bob Line was inducted into the COS hall of fame and that the COS Girls Volley Ball team was the best.

Lion Janet was with us today and was $10 happy for that fact.

Lion Allen was happy to see Janet and that the charter school vision screening was coming up this Wednesday.

Lion Tom Gaebe was happy the USC Trojans were ranked 12th in the nation in football.

Lion Bard was also glad to see Janet.

Lion Karen was glad to see Lion Janet because Karen was the only girl at today’s meeting before Janet arrived.

Fines

Lion Allen fined Lion Roy for the “Greek” joke he told and could not repeat in public.

Today, COS President and Superintendent Brent Calvin discussed COS Measure C on the November ballot. It’s about bringing a four-year program to Tulare County through Fresno State.

Lion President Tony led the meeting today and called on Lion Brad Board to lead us in saluting the flag, Lion Dee to lead us in singing God Bless America, and Lion Bob Line to do the invocation.

The No fine badge went to Lion Brad Board. 

Lion Roy was the secret greater and was able to avoid several people and earn the club some much-needed cash.

Announcements

This was our monthly birthday callout, but none of the members who had birthdays was present, so we skipped it.

Lion Roy announced that we had received two pairs of eyeglasses donated by Mary Dyck, who contacted us through our website. We do get frequent contacts from our website, so more people are finding our club.

Lion Tom Gaebe announced and took sign-ups for the band review taking place next Saturday, the 15th. Thirty-three bands are in the review this year.

Lion Allen announced a Vision Screening is being held at Valley Life Charter School on Wednesday the 19th from 9:30-1:30. Anyone who would like to help contact Allen at 936-4563.

New Lion Colin Franey was given his name badge and time to talk a little about himself.

No auction items today, but Lion Tom Gabie recently went to Alaska fishing and didn’t bring anything back except $10 cash.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Dee was happy for his ABD team in the baseball playoffs: ABD=Anyone But the Dodgers.

Lion Pat was happy that Pete had helped him get some money returned.

Lion Steve was happy his son, who was in South Carolina recently during Hurricane Ian, got out safely.

Lion Bob Line was happy for Fresno State Alum Aaron Judge hitting 62 home runs and taking the American league record.

Lion Brad was happy to see that Lion Colin was an Eagle Scout along with Lions Pete and Himself.

Lion Pat was happy that his dad was also an eagle scout and, at the time, was too young to have it awarded. He had to wait till he got of age to receive the award.

Lion Pete was optimistic when he said that the Giants might acquire Aaron Judge next season, and he was also happy because that afternoon, he was leaving for LAX and a trip to Ireland for two weeks.

Lion Allen was happy his daughter got a job.

Lion Craig was happy he was going to Shaver Lake with his girlfriend, but her mom and dog were also coming along. We’ll see how happy he is next week.

Lion Tom Link fined Lion Tom Gabie for playing the USC fight song right next to him during the meeting, and he could not hear what Lion Tony was saying.

Lion Allen fined Lion Bob Line, an FSU alum, because the Fresno State football team lost to one of the worst teams in the country last week.

Lion Craig won the no fine badge today.

Announcements

Next week will be our Monthy evening meeting at Quail Park Shannon Ranch. If you have not received the email from Lion Lauri, please contact her and let her know if you will be attending that meeting. Quail Park needs to know how much food to repair. Dinner is $20.

Auction Items

Lion Brent had gone to Las Vegas but did not bring back anything to auction off (he said it was all business), so he donated $10.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Pat was happy that his nephew had gone to State Line Nevada and won some cash more than once, $1,200 on one occasion, $800 another time.

Lion Bob Line was happy that he was celebrating his birthday this week.

Lion Dee was happy his granddaughter would be in the Little Thearders production of  The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf at the Rawhide Stadium this October 13-15.

Lion Aaron was happy Fire Chief Dan Griswold was with us today and he had a happy buck for being able to watch Rober Federer’s last tennis match. Seeing the three best tennis players (Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal) at one time was a joy.

Lion Karen had ten happy bucks, five for her new granddaughter, and 5 for the fact that she will be going on holiday to Greece. 

Lion Brent, our program chairman, was $5 happy, partly because chief Griswold could make it on short notice for our program today, and his daughter was getting back into Gymnastics.

Lion Craig had a happy $140. He found out that he had paid his dues twice, so he proceeded to give us a long story (for that extra $140 that he donated to the club)  about going through some old mementos and finding his Middle School report card, which was not such a good one as we found out. He also found out from his 90-year-old Cusson that a wedding dress that had been handed down through the family was made from a parashot that his dad had brought back with him from WWII. Lion Pat followed that up with a comment about the bride trying to bail out.

Fines

Lion Dee fined Lion Tom Link for bragging about his golf game.

Lion Dee fined the Dodger fans for not being happy about winning the west. 

Lion Pat fined Lion Tom Link because he closed his clothing store (ten years or more ago), and he has no place to buy good clothing.

Visalia fire chief Dan Griswold was with us again today and a big thanks for him stepping in at the last moment. We had no program for today’s meeting, and Dan gracelessly agreed to talk just a couple of days ago; even though he had been here just a few weeks ago we had a lot of questions for him about the downtown fire, response times, and how the paramedics with the fire dept and the ambiances services in the city work together.

Megan Roberts, granddaughter of our program Lion Richard, was our guest, and at the start of the meeting, Colin Franey was a guest; by the end of the meeting, the board had voted to make him our newest member. Welcome, Colin.

Announcements

Lion Karen announced that Lion Melinda is collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans for our Huston school.

Lion Miriam had been to Miami with her husband for an entrepreneurs conference and did some sightseeing; she brought back a package of Coconut Candies and a package of Cookies from Little Havana; the coconut went to Lion Karen for $8.00 and the cookies to Lion Tom Link for $12.00.

Note: Annual dues are due now.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Dee was happy because he had an Echocardiogram and an EKG last week, and the doctor confirmed that he had a heart.

Lion Karen was happy that she should have a new granddaughter come Saturday night.

Our guest and fellow Lion Richard Manley was happy his granddaughter was with us today. Richard was also our program today.

Lion Tom Link was happy that he got a birdie during his golf game today.

Lion Karen was happy that Colin Franey was with us today and had submitted his membership application.

Lion Pat was also happy that Colin was with us and that Franeys was still in business.

Lion Craig was happy they found nothing to worry about after Dr. Machado, our guest last week, had taken a biopsy on his back.

Fines

Lion Allen fined himself because he had said “happy birthday shortie” to former president Ruth on Facebook. He also fined both Bob and Tom for having flowered shirts on today.

Lion Betty fined Lion Roy for making Vickie the butt of a “short” joke earlier in the meeting. Tony had said we would have a short board meeting after our regular meeting was over, and I noted that Vickie was not here.

Winners and Losers

$5 went to Lion Steve, who thought he had won the free add, but he recovered and gave the five to the Lions Eye Foundation.

Lotto tickets went to Roar editor Roy who found that he had won nothing to his great surprise: not.

Today’s Program

Fellow Lion Richard Manley from the Sequoia club was our program today. He gave us a lot of information about NASA and all the projects they have going on. This is the second time he has given us a program about NASA, and as with the first time back in June, it was interesting and informative.
