Todays Meeting

Lion stand-in President Roy led our annual Christmas meeting, calling on Lion Bob Line to lead us in singing God Bless America, Lion Leigh in the flag salute, and Lion Dee to do the invocation.

Guests

We had several guests today, including three from the Emergency Aid counsel: Lion Iris East,  their development director, Mary Jennings, their executive director, and Lion Pete’s daughter, Leslie Anderson, president of their board of directors. We then went around the room, having our members with a guest do the introductions.  Lion Tony’s wife Nancy, Lion Bob Lines wife Norma Kay, and Lion Tom Link’s wife Ordonna.

The no-fine badge was drawn, and Lion Roy won it for the third week in a row. (we are planning a Vegas trip after Christmas; I hope my winning luck holds up)

Announcements 

Next Friday, December 22: There will be a meeting.

Lion Allen announced that he had delivered the $500 donation to Visalia Post Acute and that their annual gift giveaway will be this coming  next Wednesday at 2:30 (that’s in the afternoon)

Lion Pete, a former Board member for Visalia Emergency Aid, presented our guests with a donation of $1,525 from the club. $1,000 was from the club budget, and the remainder was collected at today’s meeting.

We also presented our Server at Left of Center with a yearly tip. Thanks Daniel for being such a good host this entire year.

Auction items

Lion Pat had received an item he had not opened and had no idea what it was, other then it was something to do with American Indians. He auctioned it off, and Mary Jane from VEAC purchased it for $10; it was an American Indian Mug. 

Happy Bucks 

Lion Dee was happy his barbershop group had a good event last Saturday with a good turnout. 

Lion Roy was $4 happy, one for each cylinder of his new car. 

Lion Pete was happy that Iris and Mary Jane were here today and also happy to see his Daughter Leslie with us. 

Lion Tom Link was happy that the Redwood High School Choir was our entertainment today and that he had recently had a fireplace insert installed. He said his house was very toasty now. 

Lion Brad was $10 happy to be back at club as he had been away for a few weeks, with a trip to Wichita Kansas, and Washington State. 

Fines

Lion Roy fined himself $5.00, because he forgot to pick a secret greeter for today’s meeting.

Lion Leigh fined Lion Roy for some mistakes in last week’s Roar Newsletter, when he found out that Roy had the no-fine badge, he said that it was worth it to pay the fine himself to get things straight.

Our entertainment today was provided by the Redwood High School Chamber Choir singers; 27 of them squeezed into the room and performed many beautiful Christmas songs for a half hour. They were acomponed by Lion Brads daughter. Check out the short video of them singing.

Lion stand-in President Roy led our meeting today and called on Lion Dee to lead us in singing God Bless America, Lion Pat for the flag salute, and Lion Bob Line to do the invocation.

Our secret greeter was Lion John, who was so popular that only Lion Tom Link didn’t shake his hand.

Announcements

Lion Roy announced next week’s board meeting at Vahala’s Restaurant at 7 AM on Wednesday the 13th.

Lion Steve announced next week’s meeting will be our annual Christmas Party. It will be held at our regular meeting on Friday the 15th at noon at our normal Left of Center location. Steve sent a sign-up sheet around. If have not signed up, please get in touch with Roy at 559-289-2382 to let me know if you will be in attendance and if you plan on having a guest. We will have the Redwood Coral group with us for entertainment.

Next week’s meeting: Please bring two toys, one for a boy and one for a girl. They will be given to Visalia Emergency Aid who will be there to receive our annual donation. We will also be taking donations for our server, Daniel for all his hard work this year.

Lion John has been brewing beer again and his latest is a Chocolate Cherry Stout that Lion Karen purchased for $22.

Happy Bucks 

Lion John was happy to be at our meeting today since it was the Christmas rush and he normally has to be in one of his stores, but this year he has them running like a well (shoe) polished machine.

Lion Pete was $15 happy that his wife brought home a branch from the family’s old ranch that was sold back in 1932.

Lion Roy was happy that nobody was hurt in a car accident he was involved in. He totaled his old Suzuki hatchback and has been out car shopping. 

Lion Leigh (who took notes for the roar today, thank you) was happy because he was celebrating his 37th wedding anniversary.

Lion Tony was happy that his son and daughter-in-law were becoming foster parents.

Lion Tom Link was happy because he played a very cold round of golf this morning and shot two pars, though he did lose three balls on one hole.

Lion Mark was happy that his daughter was doing well at her new physical therapy job.

Lion Roy had a happy buck for Lion Leigh taking notes for this newsletter.

Fines

Lion Dee fined Lion Tom Link, for coming in late and not closing the back door. Asking Tom if he was raised in a barn.

Announcements

Lion Roy, along with Lions Allen and Steve, announced that Monday’s Candy Cane Lane Parade organization went well and thanked Jose Barajas of Ka-Lazh Hair Salon on church street for his help again this year. 

Lion Dee announced that his barbershop group, the Mighty Oak Chorus, will have a concert this Saturday, December 9th. You can find complete info here

Christmas program: Friday the 15th will be our Christmas program this year, with a group from Redwood High School being our entertainment. Please let Lion Roy (text me at 559-289-2382) know if you will be attending and if you will have a guest so we can tell Daniel at Left of Center. We will also pass the hat for Daniel’s yearly tip over the next couple weeks. Plus, please bring two unwrapped toys, one for a boy and one for a girl, so that we can give them to Emergency Aid that day.

After being called out but not fined (not with the no fine badge)  for not calling for any auction items, fill in President Lion Roy called on Lion Tom Link, who auctioned off a bag of, wait for it, Salt Water Taffy, that went to Lion Karen for $6.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Karen started the happy bucks with five of them for returning to the club after a few weeks away.

Lion Steve was happy about the Christmas Parade’s success and the fact that it was over.

Lion Tom Gaebe was happy to be here and happy to see the PD with us today.

Lion Dee was happy that his daughter and Tom’s daughter were having birthdays soon, as they were both born one day apart at the old Kaweah Hospital.

Lion Tom Link was also happy to be at the meeting today.

Lion Tony was also happy the parade went so well.

Lion Aaron was happy his wife, Lion Betty, was recovering well from her recent pacemaker implant.

Lion Allen was happy about his recent trip to Carson City with his son and Daughter, but not so delighted that he left Carson City Casinos some of his money.

Lion Pete was $20 happy for a bunch of stuff.

Lion Mark was happy his daughter was doing well in her first winter in Boisi, Idaho.

Fines

Lion Tom Link was fined because he was late. Actually, I think he fined himself, and he was fined for his phone going off.

Lion Dee funded Lion Tom Gaebe for USC losing to UCLA in football.

Lion Pete fined Lion Tom Link because the other day, Lion Tom came up to him in their neighborhood and got on his case for not having his Christmas light up, but Pete noted that Tom didn’t know what he was talking about because they were already up.

Bullpen President Lion Roy led our meeting today and called on Lion Pat to lead us in singing My Country Tis of Thee, Lion Bob Line for the flag salute, and Lion Dee to do the invocation.

Guests

Our head greeter, Lion Allen, announced the four members of the Cutler-Orosi Lions Club who were visiting today and who became our program as the scheduled program canceled because of a funeral. The Cutler-Orosi group is in the process of getting another short tail award. This award is erned by any Lion who visitis at least 11 clubs in district 4A2 (our district) during a year (July 1-June 3oth). There is also a Long Tail award, and that is erned by visiting every club in District 4A2. for that there is no time limit. 

Announcements

Christmas Parade: Monday, November 27th, will be the annual Candy Cane Lane parade, which means our club helps organize the entrants so that they are all lined up and ready to go down the route in the order they are set to do. If you are prepared to help, meet Lion Steve at the corner of Main and Liberty at 5:00 PM, (in front of Uhl Rubber) to pick up paperwork. Wear your Lion’s vest, bring a flashlight (a headband light works great), and be ready to tell people where to go.

The Cutler-Orosi group announced their 40th-anniversary celebration will be held at the Orosi Memorial Hall on January 26th and we are all invited.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Elaine was happy that Lion Betty was doing well. She had recently had a pacemaker installed and had to go back and have a little more work done on it. We all have her in our thoughts and prayers and hope to see her soon.

Lion Dee was happy that he recently had a Great Gradnshild added to his list of grandkids and great-grandkids.

Lion Tom Gaebe was happy to see the four Lions from the Cutler-Orosi club with us today and he was also happy with all the help from both our club and the Cutler-Orosi club provided at the band review on October 21. 

Lion Michael from Cutler-Orosi was happy that clubs could help each other.

Lion Roy was happy to see the Cutler-Orosi group, and was happy he got to ride his motorcycle to club today, and was able to get through some stalled traffic on high 99 by doing some lane splitting.

Lion Bob Line was happy that his relative who is in the Honda TV commercial for having a car with about a million miles on the clock is getting seen by some of the club members.

Fines

Lion Dee fined Lion Pat, but the notes do not reveal the reason. Does Dee need a reason? 

Lion Elaine fined herself for being late and for not having a badge on.

Announcements

Lion Bob Line reminded the club that the celebration of life for Lion Bob Bricker would be Saturday, November 18th at the Darling Hotel from 1:30-4:30.

Lion president Roy announced that at the meeting on Wednesday morning, the board decided to end the almost two-year practice of meeting on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the evening. The club will return to meeting every Friday at noon at Left of Center.

The board also voted to return to a golf tournament fundraiser to be held on Friday, September 20th, 2024. After the results of the Murder Mystery Dinner had not been what the club had hoped, the board decided that we would go back to an event that the club had done for many years in the past. Lion Melinda will be the committee chairman.

The board also voted to give Hands in the Community a donation of $250 to help with the purchase of a special boot for an elderly lady who had found her boot missing when she returned from a stay in a nursing home. The original boot had been paid for by her insurance and she did not have the funds to pay for a new one out of her pocket. Hands in the community had then gone to the manufacturer and negotiated a lower price, then went to a local doctor who agreed to change his cost. 

The board also decided that Friday, December 15th, would be the date for our annual Christmas party. Invite your spouse or friend and bring a toy for a boy and a girl for our annual drive for Visalia Emergency Aid.

Happy Bucks 

Lion president Roy was happy he had no jobs for the coming week. After over a month of being swamped, it’s time for a little rest.

Lion Dee had a happy buck/announcement because the Mighty Oak Chorus, of which he and Lion Pat are members, has a Christmas concert coming up on December 9th at the Fountain church.

Lion Bob Line was happy Fresno State football had won.

Lion Tony was happy to see Lion June Anna and Ms. California Teen Marlie Wright with us today.

Lion Craig was happy that he was able to ride his bike to the meeting today and happy that the snow, which is due later in the week, was going to hold off for a few days so he could get his ski patrol lessons in.

Lion Pete was also happy to see our guests and happy that he was moving his office to a larger space soon.

Lion Pat was happy that Lion Tony filled in as the Lion Tamer for the day, and he was happy for his barbershop group’s Christmas program.

Fines

Lion Dee fined Lion Craig for scaring him by riding his bike and not stopping at the stop sign.

Lion Roy had a buck for a joke about Frosty the snowman in the vegetable aisle, checking out the carrots; when asked what he was doing, he replied, oh nothing, just picking my nose.

Lion Bob Line was fined for not having his badge on.

The last of the bullpen presidents, Lion Roy, led our meeting today and called on Lion Dee to lead us in singing a rousing song, Lion Leigh to lead us in saluting our flag, and Lion John to do the invocation.

Lion Mark was our secret greeter and managed to avoid some members and get a few dollars for the club.

Announcements 

Lion Bob Line announced that the celebration of life for Lion Bob Bricker will be held on Saturday, November 18th, at the Darling Hotel in Downtown Visalia from 1:30-4:30.

Lion Steve passed around a plaque given to the club by the Cal Ripken Baseball League for our sponsorship of one of the teams.

A signup sheet was passed around for work on the Candy Cane Lane Parade the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Reminder: Wednesday, November 8th, is our monthly board meeting at Valhalla’s Restaurant on Center Street at 7 AM.

Next week, we will have Miss California Teen, Marlie Wright with us for our program, which should be a good one.

Happy Bucks 

Acting president Lion Roy had a happy $20 because he was back at the club after being absent for the past month. It had been one of the busiest months he had had in his business in many years.

Lion Craig was happy to see Lion Roy leading the meeting today because he didn’t have to do it.

Lion Iris East-Fever from the Sequoia Lions Club (and our speaker today) was happy to be with us because it took her away from her hectic job for a few hours.

Lion John was happy to see Lion Iris and Lion Leigh with us. Lion Leigh had been away for a few weeks.

Lion Tom Gaebe was happy the Band Review went off so well, and he thanked all of the club members who helped out that day.

Lion Leigh was happy that he had taken a group of Special Olympics athletes to Sacramento for a Golf tournament recently, and they had all received a second-place award.

Lion Aaron was happy his wife, Lion Betty, was feeling better.

Lion Pat had a happy $5 and a joke about the Chicago Bears. He was also happy that a local Halloween Hay ride had gone well and work on his sprinkler system was finished.

Lion Karen was happy she had just 75 kids come to her house for Halloween.

Lion Roy was happy that he had his usual amount of kids for Halloween: zero, up from last year’s  negative 0.

Fines

Lion Mark fined himself because he had to leave early.

Lion Pete fined acting president Lion Roy because he had not sent out an email reminding him of the meeting schedule, so he, along with Lion Dee and Lion Pat, showed up last Friday when there was no meeting, being that there was a Wednesday evening meeting that week.

Lion Karen fined Lion John because she did not get the normal Lions 10% discount at John’s Feet for Life shoe store, she was informed that it was now just 5%. In his defense, Lion John said that was a mistake, and the Lion’s discount is still 10%. She also fined Lions Pete, Dee, and Pat for not knowing the schedule and coming to Left of Center for the meeting last Friday.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lion Irist East-Feaver from the Visalia Emergence Air counsel and the Sequoia Lions Club was our program today. She talked about the Race against Hunger taking place on Thanksgiving morning and what Emergence Aid does for the needy people of the county.
