Lion President Tony led the meeting again today. Lion Pete led us in saluting our flag; Lion Dee led us in singing God Bless America, and Lion Bob Line did our invocation.

Megan Roberts, granddaughter of our program Lion Richard, was our guest, and at the start of the meeting, Colin Franey was a guest; by the end of the meeting, the board had voted to make him our newest member. Welcome, Colin.

Announcements

Lion Karen announced that Lion Melinda is collecting pull tabs from aluminum cans for our Huston school.

Lion Miriam had been to Miami with her husband for an entrepreneurs conference and did some sightseeing; she brought back a package of Coconut Candies and a package of Cookies from Little Havana; the coconut went to Lion Karen for $8.00 and the cookies to Lion Tom Link for $12.00.

Note: Annual dues are due now.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Dee was happy because he had an Echocardiogram and an EKG last week, and the doctor confirmed that he had a heart.

Lion Karen was happy that she should have a new granddaughter come Saturday night.

Our guest and fellow Lion Richard Manley was happy his granddaughter was with us today. Richard was also our program today.

Lion Tom Link was happy that he got a birdie during his golf game today.

Lion Karen was happy that Colin Franey was with us today and had submitted his membership application.

Lion Pat was also happy that Colin was with us and that Franeys was still in business.

Lion Craig was happy they found nothing to worry about after Dr. Machado, our guest last week, had taken a biopsy on his back.

Fines

Lion Allen fined himself because he had said “happy birthday shortie” to former president Ruth on Facebook. He also fined both Bob and Tom for having flowered shirts on today.

Lion Betty fined Lion Roy for making Vickie the butt of a “short” joke earlier in the meeting. Tony had said we would have a short board meeting after our regular meeting was over, and I noted that Vickie was not here.

Winners and Losers

$5 went to Lion Steve, who thought he had won the free add, but he recovered and gave the five to the Lions Eye Foundation.

Lotto tickets went to Roar editor Roy who found that he had won nothing to his great surprise: not.

Lion Karen won the marble drawing but came up short (there’s that word again) on picking the white marble. 

Today’s Program

Fellow Lion Richard Manley from the Sequoia club was our program today. He gave us a lot of information about NASA and all the projects they have going on. This is the second time he has given us a program about NASA, and as with the first time back in June, it was interesting and informative.

Auction Items

Lion Miriam had been to Miami with her husband for an entrepreneurs conference and did some sightseeing; she brought back a package of Coconut Candies and a package of Cookies from Little Havana; the coconut went to Lion Karen for $8.00 and the cookies to Lion Tom Link for $12.00.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Pete had $20. First, he had to leave early, and the happy bucks were for a great backpacking trip to Evolution Valley in Kings Canyon national park. He said he would give us a presentation later in the year. He had also spent some time camping at Huntington and Shaver Lake last week.

Lion Dee was happy that today would be the last day of +100 degree days for the foreseeable future.

Lion Miriam was happy to be back from Miami.

Lion Karen was also happy that the heat spell, which has lasted for nearly two months, was going to be over. In checking temperature records, there have only been three days under 100 during August and the first week of September.

Lion Pat was happy his generator was working just fine, so if his electricity went out, he would not have a problem.

Lion Betty was happy to have Dr. Carol Machado as our program today.

Lion Tom Link was happy Edison did not turn his power off. The program he is on with Edison allows them to do that in emergency situations.

Lion Elaine was happy she went to a Right to Life event the evening before.

Fines

Lion Betty fined Lion Pat for being rude to Lion Bob Line during the song; she said he bumped into Bob as he was making his way to the front and had no apology; in a rebuttal, Lion Pat said he was working, bringing the money to Karen.

Lion Dee fined Lion Bob Bricker because his grandson called him during the meeting.

Lion Tom Gaebe also funded Lion Bricker because he had Bob’s tax information from 2019.

The $5 Drawing went to Lion Roy, who donated it to the Lions Eye Foundation.

The Lotto tickets went to Lion Pat.

The Marble went to guest Colin Franey, who drew a nonwhite marble and thus won no money. 

 

Today’s Program

Dr. Carol Machado from Visalia Medical clinic was with us today to discuss breast cancer. She has been a general surgeon in Visalia for about four years, and she gave us a lot of information about new techniques in breast cancer surgery, which is her specialty.

Lion President Tony lead us in our monthly evening meeting and called on Lion Lauri to lead us in saluting the flag, Lion Bob Line in leading our song, God Bless America, and Lion Melinda did the invocation tonight.

The no fine badge went to Dr. Craig Wheaton, who was also our program.

Lion Melinda was the secret greater, and we gained no cash as everyone shook her hand.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Pat was happy that his daughter-in-law had a baby this past week and it appears it will be a very smart kid as Pat said it had a very large head.

Lion Craig had 5 happy dollars for all the people at our night meeting for August.

Lion Melinda was $10 happy to be at the evening meeting as she can not make our Friday meetings.

Lion Roy was happy that he got through the MRI that he had on Monday and that the Dr. said he still had a brain.

Lion Janet was happy to see everyone.

Lion Karen had a happy buck because the Giants were still in the running for the wild card.

Our own Lion Craig was our program today, along with his guest Karen. They talked about their hike around Mt. Blanc in Europe. About the scenery and the various huts they stayed in during their trip.

Next weeks meeting will be our monthly evening meeting at Quail Park Shannon Ranch:  Wednesday, August 24th. 5:30 

There will be no meeting next Friday. 

Mark your calendars for September 15th, the day of the Threes Rivers Lions Club 75th-anniversary celebration at the Three Rivers Lions Arena. Reservations must be received no later than September 1st. Call their secretary Mary Andrade at 559-561-4692 and leave a message regarding attendance.

Lion Cheri from the Pride Lions shared a fundraising opportunity with all the clubs in the area. Fresno State needs help with its concession sales on the following dates (Football games) Sept 1 and 10th, Oct. 15th and 29th, and Nov. 25th. Contact Lion Tony if you would like to help. Funds will go to clubs based on attendance.

Lion Miriam announced that the TC Association of Realtors is hosting a Los Vegas Night. Even though she did say there would be Russian Roulette, we persuaded her that we were fairly certain this was not a game that would be played at that event.  Check out the flyer for this event.

We had two guests today, Dr. Shravan Gunde and Dr. Sireesha Palkamsetti, who are considering joining the club.

Auction Items

Although not an auction item, Lion Roy had been on an auto trip from San Francisco to Ferndale and did not bring back anything to auction off, so he gave $10.

Happy Bucks 

Lion Miriam had a happy $5 because her grandmother had undergone two surgeries in the last few weeks and is doing well.

Lion Aaron was happy for our two guests today.

Lion Pete was happy he will be on his annual backpacking trip next week and will not be at our meeting.

Lion Brad was happy that he had bought another home in Washington state this past week (that makes two)

Lion Tom was happy that within the hour, he would be off to Moro Bay, where the temps were in the 60s.

Lion Pat was happy his neighbor had told him about a broken sprinkler head in his backyard because he never looked out the window at that part of his yard.

Lion Craig was happy that he would be up at Shaver Lake soon and gave part of two weeks ago’s marble winnings for a total of $10 happy bucks.

Lion Roy was happy about the car trip he and his wife had recently returned from up the coast, happy that the Dodgers were in the first place by a few games, and happy that he had photographed the Kaweah Golf Tournament two weeks ago.

Fines

Lion Aaron fined both Lions Tom and Bob Line for having their own conversations while our two guests were introducing themselves.

Lion Tom fined Lion Bob Line for not showing up at the recent Rawhide game even though he had told Tom he would be there. Bob’s excuse, it was just too hot.

Lion Roy fined Lion Karen for sending him the notes from last week’s meeting yesterday, six days after the meeting, and too late to do the newsletter. This was the second time Karen paid two dollars.

Lion Dee fined Lion Bob Bricker for his phone going off earlier in the meeting; Dee said it woke him up.

Lion Pat fined Lion Dee for being so comfortable after his back surgery that he could just fall asleep during our meeting.

Lion President Tony fined Lion Miriam for her promotion earlier.

Secret greater: Lion Betty, who was able not to shake some hands and earn some money for the club.

New member, Lion Elaine Dias gave us a little information about herself in her introductory speech. She was raised in Goshen, graduated from Mt. Whitney, and is retired. She wore her badge upside down, as all new members do until they attend a board meeting, for only a little over an hour, as we had a short board meeting at the end of today’s meeting.

Today’s guests were a former member and former president (2013-14), Lion Jamil Nushwat, who rejoined the club (welcome back), and his guest and fellow attorney Andrew. Our Mayor Steve Nelsen was also with us today as our program. Also with us today was Lion Justin. 

Announcements

Lion Allen announced that the club raised $180 for Goshen school at last Wednesday’s evening meeting and that it was used to buy lots of learning accessories for the kids at the school. We also did a vision screening at the school last Tuesday where we screened 48 kids and refired 11 of them for eye exams.

Lion Jamel was happy to be back with the club and happy that he recently got married a few weeks ago.

Lion Dee was happy to be back at the club after a few weeks away because of back surgery. He said he was doing better.

Lion Brad was happy that his wife, who has had some issues with cancer, had surgery on Monday and now will have a few rounds of Kemo. Here’s hoping things go well, Brad.

Lion Betty was happy that the mayor was with us today.

Lion Roy was four dollars happy, one for each game the Dodgers won over the Giants the past weekend.

Lion Justin checked in with Lion Vicki, and she is doing well.

Lion Tom Gaebe was happy that Lion Vicki was doing well and that Dodger Cody Bellinger had just hit a grand slam.

Lion Allen was happy that the vision screening had gone well on Tuesday and happy to see Lion Jamil and Lion Justin were here today.

Lion Elaine was happy to be with us today.

Lion President Tony was happy to see Jamil, Andrew, Mayor Steve, and Justin today.

Lion Roy fined Lion Jamil for using his phone’s flashlight at the table to help him fill out his membership forms.

Visalia Mayor Steve Nelsen, who we found wears many hats and sits on several boards, was our guest today and had plenty to talk about, including some of the things going on downtown, water, and flood insurance. Lion Brent, our first vice president, and program chairman, noted that we are still in need of a speaker for this coming Wednesday’s evening meeting at Quail Park Shannon Ranch. Contact him at brobinson@moneyconcepts.com for any program ideas.

This week’s meeting will be our monthly evening meeting at Quail Park Shannon Ranch (there will be no Friday meeting this week) from 5:30-7:00 on Wednesday, July 20th. $20 each to be paid upon arrival; menu includes meatloaf*, mashed potatoes, vegetable medley, a side salad, and assorted desserts/fruit.  *Vegetarian: options available upon request.

Our guest, Dr. Mustapha Debboun, announced that on October 8th, the Delta Victor control district is having a 100th-anniversary party from 10 AM-2 PM, and we are all invited. See what they do to control Mosquitos and have some free food along with it.

Lion Craig recently returned from a hike in Europe and had two items, a bar of Toblerone chocolate that went to Lion Steve for $10 and a package of dried pork salami that also went for $10 to Lion Brent.

Lion Pete was happy that he had some family time with relatives in the pacific northwest, but he did not bring back anything for an auction item, so he donated $10. He also had a dollar for his parents, who celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.

Lion Pat was also happy that he had family time in Tustin.

Lion Miriam was happy to be back as she had missed a week or two.

Lion Betty was out of quarantine for COVID and was happy about that.

Lion Craig was happy (well, maybe not completely happy) to return from his hiking trip to Europe.

Lion Karen was happy to have our speakers here today.

Lion Brent was also happy for our speakers and happy his son made the time trials for swimming.

Our speaker, Rajeev was happy to be with us today.

Lion Pete was happy for Lion Bob Lines’s great-grandson, who qualified for the state Cal Ripkin tournament and went to the championship game. They didn’t win the game, but it was quite an accomplishment to make it that far.

Lion Pat was happy his son-in-law took his kids to a Red Sox game.

Lion Roy was was glad to be back after he had spent the past week at home building fences; he was also happy the Dodgers were in the first place.

Lion Karen fined Lions Roy, Betty, and Pat for short jokes earlier in the meeting. Apparently, without Lion Vickie at the meeting, Lion Karen is the shortest member in attendance.

Rajeev Vaidyanathan with Oxitec and Dr. Mustapha Debboun of Delta Vector Control District were our speakers today and gave us a wealth of information about controlling Mosquitos, including Oxitec’s innovative technology where they bread Male Mosquitos that when they impregnate females produce female offspring (the females are the ones that bite) that die right away, thus only the Males live. It was an interesting program.

Rajeev Vaidyanathan with Oxitec tells us that only the Female Mosquitos bite and that it only takes a few days in stagnant water as small as a water bottle cap can allow them to hatch.
